NHDOT Seeks Public Input on Intersection Conflict Warning Systems

ICWS systems to be installed at three intersections

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) will be installing Intersection Conflict Warning Systems (ICWS) at three intersections this month and is seeking public input.  This informational document provides details about these new systems and a short survey has been developed to collect public comments.  The feedback will be used to evaluate the systems as part of a three-year pilot study.

Research has shown that ICWS devices can reduce the number of crashes at intersections that do not warrant signalization, and at a lesser cost than signalization.  They are used primarily at rural intersections and provide warnings to drivers that another driver could be entering or crossing the road they are on.  NHDOT’s systems will automatically generate alarms and alerts to our Transportation Management Center in Concord so that maintenance crews can be notified of a possible malfunction and allow troubleshooting and resolution of some issues remotely.
