Route 1A Rye Culvert Replacement Meeting

NHDOT will discuss the structure size alternatives, selection of preferred alternative, and traffic control options.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) will attend a Rye Selectboard Meeting to discuss the replacement of a 3.5 foot wide x 7 foot high stone box culvert under Route 1A, located approximately 500 feet north of Locke Road in Rye.  The meeting will be held on Monday, October 24, 2022 at 6:30 pm, at the Rye Town Hall Meeting Room, 10 Central Road, Rye, NH.  The public is encouraged to attend and participate.

The purpose of this project is to replace a culvert that has reached the end of its service life.  Replacement of structures such as these, especially within tidal flow, requires adherence to NHDES stream crossing rules.  These rules would call for increasing the size of this structure for future sea level rise, tidal flow, and as well as for the benefit of fish and other species passage.  The effects of increasing the structure size has on tidal flow, storm flow, and species passage will be presented.  The preferred structure size and reasoning for its selection will also be presented.

Due to the time limitations on the contractor when working around potential storm flow at peak month high tide, a potential road closure option and traffic control options will also be discussed.

Citizens and public officials will have an opportunity to ask questions and share their thoughts regarding existing deficiencies to ensure that the project decisions meet public transportation needs and community goals, and to protect and enhance the environment.  Accordingly, NHDOT assures that this project will be administered according to the requirements of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and all related statutes to ensure nondiscrimination.
