Specialty Section
The section is responsible for project development of programs related to each group and is involved in the management of each group’s respective assets. Each group is considered subject matter experts in their field and can be utilized as a resource to other sections and bureaus.
The Specialty Section is involved with two distinct areas of design: Guardrail and Hydraulics.
The Guardrail Group develops projects to update aging guardrail, outdated systems, and improve roadside safety. The group reviews designs by other sections or bureaus, as requested, in addition to maintaining and developing special details and standards related to guardrail.
The Hydraulics Group develops projects to address aging culverts, closed systems, and flooding issues. The group aids other sections and bureaus in hydraulic assessment and in choosing preservation treatments for existing systems. Responsibilities include developing special details and specifications regarding drainage as well as future revisions of the drainage design manual. The group provides direction for the Department to stay current with hydrologic and hydraulic computation, modelling and research.
